There are several reasons why Sweden has become such an attractive market for energy storage. We have invested heavily in wind and solar parks—weather-dependent energy sources where significant value can be gained from storing energy. Even though new wind farm development is currently on hold, we already have many completed parks that generate electricity in a way that is imbalanced for the grid. This creates an opportunity to store electricity when production is high and sell it when demand—and prices—are at their peak.

Another business opportunity is to use energy storage as an ancillary service. The power grid needs to be balanced, and energy storage systems are ideal for helping maintain a stable frequency. However, prices in this segment are currently trending somewhat downward.

We believe that electricity demand in Sweden will double over time. This electrification is driving the need for a flexible power system with reserve capacity for industries, data centers, and transport that consume large amounts of electricity.

We also face bottlenecks from north to south, where energy storage can help reduce peak loads and relieve congestion in constrained parts of the grid.

All of this combined has led to an influx of opportunistic actors in the market—something that has now stabilized somewhat into a smaller number of larger Swedish and international companies.
